Dean Ludwig’s distinctive rocking chairs are as sensuous and comfortable as they are beautiful. The flowing lines and joinery as well as the hand-rubbed oil and beeswax finish (eight coats) invite you to touch, sit, and experience the hand-made rocking chairs' delights.
Each rocking chair takes between 120 and 140 hours for Dean to complete. He does 100% of the work himself so he can maintain the highest level of meticulous detail and quality. After carefully selecting each piece of wood for color and grain, Dean painstakingly hand shapes every piece of every chair. Much of this can only be accomplished with non-power handtools. Dean balances each chair to achieve the perfect rock. No two chairs are exactly the same, and Dean can custom tailor a chair to your specific size.
Many years ago, Dean learned the art of making this type of rocking chair from the reknowned woodworker, Sam Maloof, whose classic rocking chairs now appear in museums across the country. Over the years, the shape and feel of Dean's chairs have evolved to reflect his own artistic style and sensibilities while maintaining some clear visual continuity with the Maloof tradition. |
